How to Take Good GCSE Notes + Study Tips!

Hey lovelies! So as I've mentioned in a bunch of other posts, this year I'm in Year 10 meaning I've just started all my new GCSE Courses and Subjects (a combination of exciting and scary haha!) So far I'm really enjoying my subjects, I chose Triple Science, French, Product Design and History which are all going okay but one thing that I've definitely been getting used to this year is taking notes. Being a neat-freak and perfectionist (as you guys probably already know from my bullet journal!) I actually really like this, something about writing things out and presenting them how I want always helps me learn and revise better and it's definitely going to come in handy looking back on all of them when I take my GCSE Exams in Year 11. Anyway in this weeks post I thought I would talk you through my best note-taking tips that I've discovered so far and study tips to get those aesthetically pleasing notes... that still actually help you study! Ft. pictures of my own Biology // Chemistry // and English notes for the start of Year 10.

01. Find your 'Notes-Style'

Choose what suits you best. Mindmaps? Posters? Charts? Whether your notes look pretty or not has no point unless you're writing them in a way you can actually learn from them. I personally, revise best when my notes are in poster form on different topics and so that's how I tend to write them!

02. Splash on the Colour (but not too much!)

Don't hesitate to add a little bit of colour - if all your notes are black and white you might as well have just got a print out. Use highlighters or fineliners to break up notes and separate important topics, don't over-do it though otherwise your notes page will just end up looking like a rainbow threw up on it and harder to study from later! I would recommend choosing one colour for each page / topic, in my case green for my Biology notes.

03. Note-'Make' don't Note-'Take'

Writing everything in your own words, whether that's simplifying it or explaining it further is so important for revision. Try to note 'Make' in your subjects instead of just copying out the textbook -because memorising it is going to be way harder in the long-run than understanding it yourself as you make your notes.

04. Separate everything into Headings and Subheadings

All the info is so much easier to revise when you split it up! I like to draw up headings and subheadings for all my topics, like you can see above, Eg. for a page on Atomic Structure: 'Electron Shells,' 'Relative Atomic Mass,' and 'Structure over History.' This makes it so much easier to read back on when you come to revise, instead of massive chunks of writing.

05. Use your highlighters properly!

We've all been through that thing of highlighting everything on a page and convincing ourselves that it's 'revising' but the best study tip is to use that all that neon stationary properly! Make a colour code eg. blue - vocab, pink - definitions/explanations, pink - quotes to remember; that way you're actually putting your highlighters to good use.

06. Go for Info > Aesthetic in Class

At the end of the day it's more important to get all the information down in class, than make it pretty! And as much as that's a struggle for me (being such a perfectionist!) always remember you can re-do notes after as pretty and neat as you like, as long as you scribbled everything you needed down in class that day. Info > Aesthetic... as hard as it is haha!

07. Look for Notes Inspo online (#studyblr)

Taking notes doesn't have to be a really annoying task, try looking up #studyblr on Pinterest and that will definitely boost your motivation. Seeing other people's notes can give you the right push of inspiration to work on your own and I'm always scrolling through them online. Hey, maybe you can even use this post for Inspo?
