Self-Confidence and Being Yourself

Confidence is tricky.
It's one of those things you can only build up. It's like a leaning tower, precariously balanced, wavering. One comment or thing will send it all toppling down like dominoes. Low Self-esteem and Confidence can be shadow over and mask anyone's personality. Anyone's.
I'm not the most confident girl in the world. Far from it in fact. But right now I do feel positive and relatively happy in my personality and my own skin. I'm extremely lucky I do not suffer from social anxiety or panic attacks, nor have I ever been bullied, but I thought I would make this post more personal than usual and talk a little about myself anyway, as this is something that everyone faces.

I, personally, have always been known as the shy one for as long as I can remember. I heavily relied on my friends and would get embarrassed and flustered when I was put on the spot or attention was thrown spontaneously at me. I felt like I had built up these kind of character traits and it meant I was afraid to do anything out of the ordinary or something people didn't expect. That was probably my biggest mistake, you should never have to compromise your own personality. I was too nervous to challenge people's average perceptions of me, up until not that long ago. Now I can openly admit my flaws as well as the good things about myself (and although it sounds ridiculously cheesy!) these quirks are what make me, me.

I feel like now, after starting a new school, I've changed quite a few qualities about myself though. Now I'm not afraid to be opinionated, no longer 'the shy friend' and am overall a little more confident. I'm sure my friends will agree, now I will not shut up haha! Of course I haven't changed completely, I still hate performing and being bold like that, but It's not something I worry about anymore.

Ways to boost your self-esteem and confidence:

1. Never compromise your personality (it never does any good)
2. Recognise your flaws and quirks (It only makes you more likeable)
3. Choose your friends wisely (don't hang around people who lower your self-esteem)
4. Stop Comparing (focus on yourself because you're the only person you need to please)
5. Start a Blog! (trust me it helps!)

Starting a blog is one of the best decisions I think I've ever made. It was hard at first, but I can see how much it's helped. Its your own little space on the web where you can be completely yourself and blog about whatever you feel like. The feeling of receiving a lovely comment from an ordinary person you haven't even talked to before, I think, is even better than one from a friend too.

This post was a little different to usual, but once I started typing, I just couldn't stop! Self-Confidence and Being Yourself is an issue everyone will face at some point, and always remember: someone could pass themselves of as bold and confident but never forget that everyone struggles with it sometimes.

QOTD: What's your best bit of advice?

  7. What a lovely post. I feel I have quite a low level of confidence but I have noticed as I have got older, it has grown a little. I definitely agree with a small group of friends, it is better to be around a few people who actually care rather than a big group who bring you down

  17. This post was lovely to read, because it can help so many people! As you say confidence is tricky and unfortunately we have to work on it all the time. And it's true that blogging helps in this matter! Also taking time to reflect upon ourselves and stop comparing with other people should be at the top of the list to feel better in our own skin :)

  28. I 100% agree with recognizing your flaws. I had a problem growing up trying to be a perfectionist but now I realize people want to relate to people who are able to open up and who can laugh at themselves.

  29. I think younger people have a lot more problems with confidence. Because they always feel like everyone is watching them, they care what others think of them, but as you grow older, you simply find people you care about and other people are no longer important. That way your confidence grows as well :) xx
